TheZeruna Farm is located in Pertica Bassa, at an altitude of 700 meters, in a mountain location in the Valle Sabbia called Zeruna

Here, the young couple, Marco and Carmela, created a vibrant and dynamic enterprise in December 2019, dedicated to the enhancement of wild herbs and fruit trees in the area. Thanks to their passion for ancient and genuine flavors, they produce jars of mountain herbs in oil and delicious jams.

Marco and Carmela’s philosophy is very simple: it is as good as it is, no preservatives or flavor enhancers are needed for nature’s products.

Do you want to try an incredible experience that confirms their philosophy?

Do as we did at Bbuono, visit Marco and Carmela at their farm and touch their reality; guided by them you will taste herbs by picking them directly from the ground; you will have a tasting of wild herbs by taking them from the ground; you will be amazed by the scents and flavors on what nature offers.

Marco and Carmela will tell you how to recognize them, collect them while respecting nature, the uses you can make of them, you will be fascinated by the multitude of herbs you come across, and you will lose yourself enchanted observing the shape of the leaves and flowers of each species.

Herbs and fruits that grow wild and seemed forgotten, Marco and Carmela tend them with great care and passion.

Here you will find gooseberries, mountain strawberries, lemon balm, bear garlic, wild lavender, helichrysum, marjoram, thyme, chives, silene, marigold, marsh marshmallow, wormwood, chicory, daisy grass, mallow, celandine, primroses and so many other herbs and flowers, if nature is respected it will always give its best.
You will come across during the walk, depending on the season you go, the inhabitants that live in this natural environment, snails, snails, ladybugs and beetles.

Carmela and Marco harvest their herbs and, following old-fashioned recipes, manually place them in jars as our grandparents did when they preserved them for the winter, always aiming for quality and not quantity.

The owners of the Zeruna farm are committed to sustainability and respect for the environment.
Marco and Carmela use natural fertilization techniques and harvest wild herbs manually, following the rhythm of the seasons and preserving the natural balance. The farm’s philosophy is based on the naturalness and seasonality of the products.

Transforming what nature offers, passion and sustainability in the Sand Valley.

In their workshop, Marco and Carmela, transform harvested herbs and fruits into products that evoke the taste and scent of mountain traditions, preserving a cultural heritage and offering high-quality products.

The Zeruna company also produces its own seeds, taken from the plants already there, without using pesticides and harvesting the fruit only when it is optimally ripe.

Zeruna Farm promotes the enhancement of local biodiversity and the preservation of native varieties, contributing to the preservation of the richness of the area and its cultural identity.

Passion and sustainability are core values of Zeruna Farm, which is committed to providing high quality products while respecting the environment and preserving the traditions of the land. Thanks to their dedication, the company has won numerous awards and recognitions, becoming a benchmark for the production of high quality and sustainable products.

Interview

Bbuono:
What were the motivating factors, besides great passion, that led you to make such a courageous choice and produce high-quality products, while also supporting the philosophy of enhancing biodiversity?
Zeruna Farm:
Beyond our passion for herbs and fruits, especially ancient and local ones, our choice was made thinking about our daughter’s well-being and about tradition. Traditions are important. In our own small way, we try to respect nature as much as possible and we want to spread, even beyond our area, what once was a source of food for our grandparents. Our goal is to carry forward the traditions of the past and share them both with young people who don’t know them and with those who have forgotten them, thus enhancing the territory.
Bbuono:
Working in the mountains is very demanding and tiring. What were the most difficult stages of your project?
Zeruna Farm:
Everything was hard work, and it still is—from preparing the soil, to planting the seedlings, to harvesting herbs and fruits (always strictly done by hand). Mountain farming is more difficult, especially in areas like ours with very steep and stony terrain; it’s impossible to reach them with machinery, so all the work must be done manually or with the help of small tools.

All of Zeruna’s products are labeled “mountain product.”

This quality indication (issued by the European Commission) aims to promote the recognizability and characteristics of the agri-food productions of mountain territories, with which the small companies of our territory tell their stories made of traditions, quality and goodness.

The “Mountain Product” label was created to show how these companies guarantee the consumer an authentically mountain product, while also ensuring that the highest quality standards are met as well as unparalleled taste.

Why did we choose the products of Zeruna Farm?

Visiting their farm, listening to Marco and Carmela talk about their plants and their “green” philosophy, and, guided by them, picking herbs directly from the soil and tasting them is a unique, fascinating, educational, and flavorful experience.

The passion they put into their work, their dedication to sustainability, and the quality of their natural products make Zeruna Farm a truly unique reality. We thank Marco and Carmela for accepting the collaboration with Bbuono.
