bbuono and transhumance in Bagolino

bbuono during the traditional transhumance event in Bagolino

An ancient rite has been repeated, every year for hundreds of years: it is the seasonal migration of the herds and shepherds who, in preparation for the cold season, descend from the high-altitude pastures and return to the valley floor. It is the ritual of transhumance, and the one in the Bagossa tradition is truly a spectacular event. That’s why we went to Bagolino where this peasant event linked to ancient traditions takes place every year.

The transhumance of Bagolino is a festive event in the Caffaro Valley and is an opportunity for entertainment and an immersion in real peasant life.

Although it is a festival that attracts so many visitors, the transhumance in Bagolino truly represents the culture of agrosilvopastoral and dairy farming civilization. It is not just a spectacle for tourists but a true demonstration of peasant life.

We witnessed the re-enactment and performance of ancient crafts, the review of tavern songs in the squares and clubs. Wandering along the streets of the historic center, in the characteristic and unique alleys of Bagolino, we found ourselves immersed in the past and tradition.

A long and complex history of this community based on the economy of dairy production that results in the production of cheeses made according to ancient recipes.

From this strong sense of belonging to the community of firm roots, the skill of the cheesemakers, continuity and a deep culture where everything revolves around livestock and intense agro-pastoral activity, comes the famous Bagoss cheese, the malga butter and goat productions that, although not as emblazoned as the cheese, are also made according to ancient artisanal (and b-delicious) recipes.

A cheese with an ancient history

Of the historic Bagòss cheese, there are documents attesting to its existence as far back as the 1500s, in ancient papers it is described that butter and Bagòss were valuable products, equal in value to a calf and a chamois.

To this day, about 1,000 cattle and 500 goats are raised by the 25 dairy farms present, which use artisanal processing techniques, even with due current sanitation regulations.

Our day then continued in the Pineta park, where other events were being held in addition to the event, a market exhibition, a competition for the best Bagòss cheese with the ONAF jury awarding the best, singing, food stands with chestnuts and mulled wine, and more.

bbuono always gladly returns to Bagolino, it is a pleasant discovery every time and our producers always welcome us very warmly.
