The wine vocation of the Valtènesi has developed around this ancient grape variety, “Groppello di Mocasina,” the only native of the area.
It is cultivated in soils that, due to exposure and microclimate, guaranteeoptimal ripening of the grapes: in fact, the bunches, which are very tight and compact, fear excessive moisture that could be a cause of deterioration.
Groppello DOC wine is paired with the dish that most represents the Brescian tradition, the spit, or with the classic “snack” with bread and salami, strictly local.
It goes very well with stewed red meat dishes with polenta and mushrooms and will amaze on warm summer evenings paired with a succulent grill.
Very useful in the preparation of a red onion compote to pair with aged cheeses.
Riviera del Garda Classico Groppello DOC wine is a quality wine with ancient origins, reflecting the winemaking tradition of the Lake Garda area.

Riviera del Garda Classico Groppello DOC: origin, pairing and tasting
What wine is Riviera del Garda Classico Groppello DOC?
This is a native red wine from Valtènesi, on the Brescia side of Lake Garda, made from Groppello grapes (a typical local vine). Ruby red color, aromas of red fruit and light spices; nimble sip, gentle tannins and dry finish. On our selection comes from the hills of Muscoline (BS), where the lake climate gives fragrant, flowing wines.
DOC designation that values small producers and careful processing.
At what temperature do you serve and what goblet to use?
Recommended serving: 14-16 °C, in medium goblet (tulip) to enhance cherry and spice aromas. No need for long oxygenation: uncork it 10-15 minutes beforehand. If young and lively, you can cool it slightly in warm weather (12-13 °C) for a tauter sip.
Alcohol content
about 13% vol.
Consumption
excellent within 2-3 years after harvest.
Tip: avoid too high temperatures: the alcohol will cover its fineness.
What to pair it with to enhance the flavors of Garda?
It is versatile at the table: perfect with Brescian cured meats, pasta with light ragù, white meats, spit-roasted meats and medium-aged cheeses from the area. If you’re looking for quick ideas:
Tagliere with Rosa Camuna + cereal bread
Casònsei or vegetable lasagna
Roast chicken, stewed rabbit
Its freshness cleanses the palate without covering dishes. For a Garda dinner, try stewed or baked lake fish: Groppello holds up well to light sauces and tomato.
What is the difference between Groppello rosso and Chiaretto della Valtènesi?
They are “terroir brothers” but not identical. Riviera del Garda Classico Groppello DOC is a red from Groppello grapes (sometimes pure), with crisp fruit and light spice; Chiaretto Valtènesi DOC is a rosé (often from Groppello with Marzemino/Barbera/Sangiovese) that is fresher and saltier, ideal with lake fish, salads and summer dishes. If you’re looking for structure and warmth on meats and savory first courses, choose Groppello; for light dishes or aperitifs, go for Chiaretto.
