What were we doing in this location with an enchanted atmosphere? We went to meet Giacomo, who introduced us to guests who are very important, indeed vital to nature: bees.

Right in marvelous Salò, on the top of a gentle hill dotted with cypresses and centuries-old olive trees, lies this ancient country residence transformed into an enchanting resort that creates an unbreakable bond with nature. It is a place that enhances biodiversity while respecting the surrounding area, so dear to personalities such as Catullus, Joyce and Byron who were fascinated by these places, its hills of cypresses and centuries-old olive trees and the ideal climate for staying all year round.

Here we are again in the hills of the magnificent Lake Garda, discovering new products, places and traditions. We are in Salò, in an old mansion from the 1700s, with an incredible panoramic view, here theBorgo Il Mezzanino farm was born.

We were greeted with great kindness and hospitality that was nothing short of disarming. Right from the start we sensed thelove of nature and an environmentally friendly reality that pervades the entire atmosphere of the Borgo.

The passion for the activity carried out is immediately felt when chatting with Giacomo, the Borgo’s beekeeper, who has a very strong bond with nature. In fact, the bees enjoy a completely natural environment, in absolute quiet and … with a breathtaking view, on top of a hill that captures Lake Garda in all its beauty.

Giacomo takes us into his world: to the apiary nestled in the greenery on Lake Garda.

Here, in talking with him, you can tell right away that he has a special bond with his bees. At one point he seemed to be talking to them so much he was in tune.

He understands them and explains that in order to help them in their times of trouble, there is no other way but to live with them, in their world, with passion and love and devoting a lot of time and effort to keep the ecosystem balanced. It is fascinating to discover the dynamics of the beehive. A special world that needs to be safeguarded as bees pollinate 80 percent of the flowers. Without them there would be a black-and-white world, not to mention all the damage it would do to the ecosystem.

James’ bees are disturbed as little as possible, thanks to technology

Tradition and innovation is exactly what fascinates us about the Borgo Il Mezzanino farm. Giacomo also uses technology for the well-being of his bees. Throughtechnological innovation, he has been able to find out more deeply and even more painstakingly what their needs are to make sure he can take the best care of them.

Every day he monitors the main values of the hives: biological parameters, weight, temperature, humidity, sound intensity and production. This allows him to know in real time the health status of his bees in order to intervene, if needed, in a targeted way to strictly solve any problems in a natural way. Through this state-of-the-art technological management and monitoring, a positive domino effect is created on everything, the bees and the beekeeper’s business.

They would perch and flutter away like nothing, from there we understood the tranquility and habit of living in a delicate but not at all stressed system that James was able to create.

We have to tell the truth, anyone who is terrified of approaching any insect, in James’s world at the end of the morning spent at his side even we at bbuono observed bees resting quietly on his arm, on his shoulders, on his legs. We realized that they are really peaceful insects.

You might say that these bees are lucky to live in a dream resort like Borgo Il Mezzanino. We recommend a visit to their apiary. Giacomo is always very willing to let people know where their fabulous honey comes from, his passion for bee welfare and the effective and responsible choices he makes on a daily basis.

Interview

Bbuono:
Hi Giacomo, how did your passion for bees begin?
Borgo Il Mezzanino:
My passion for bees started about ten years ago, almost by chance, when I helped my girlfriend’s father manage his apiary. I became fascinated by beekeeping and I couldn’t stop anymore. Over the years I experimented with new techniques, refining my knowledge, and through successes and failures I developed my experience as a beekeeper. 2019 was a real turning point for me. I was entrusted with the development of the “Ethical Honey” project by Borgo Il Mezzanino Farm; a young, innovative farm sensitive to the sustainability of the territory in which it operates.
Bbuono:
What are the most important difficulties in managing the apiary and the key stages in the production of ethical honey?
Borgo Il Mezzanino:
As I explained to you during your visit to our apiary, bees are very delicate and have many “enemies.” Unfortunately, climate change and especially pesticides are the biggest threats to this species; another major concern for beekeepers is the varroa mite. Fortunately, over time I have learned to protect our bees using a biomechanical method, supported by organic treatments. The beekeeper’s calendar is very full, with each season marked by different phases; it would be nice to explore this topic with you over the course of the year.
Bbuono:
Can you tell us about your apiary in general? How many hives, queens, and what about the honey harvest period?
Borgo Il Mezzanino:
I currently manage about one hundred hives, each with its queen, across the Garda-Valsabbia area. The apiaries are located in different places, which allows us to guarantee a more varied production. The production period starts in April and lasts until August. At the moment, Borgo Il Mezzanino Farm produces three types of honey: wildflower, acacia, and chestnut. From 2021 onwards, we are planning several projects to expand our apiaries and increase the variety of products for honey lovers.
Bbuono:
Would you recommend beekeeping to young people, and how do you see the future of beekeeping in Italy?
Borgo Il Mezzanino:
Bees play a fundamental role in nature. Although public opinion is beginning to become more aware of the subject, there is still much to be done. Beekeepers need more support. Every time I accompany young people during a visit to the apiary, my heart fills with joy. I would wholeheartedly recommend this activity to young people; despite the many difficulties, the life of a beekeeper is a source of great pride and satisfaction.
Bbuono:
We were terribly afraid of these little creatures, but by the end of the morning that fear was gone. We saw your bees land calmly on our arms. They weren’t aggressive, they didn’t seem bothered at all, they were perfectly at ease despite our presence, and we too felt calm (believe us, before we were truly terrified at the mere thought of getting close). How did you manage to create such an environment? It almost seemed like you were talking to them.
Borgo Il Mezzanino:
I didn’t create anything! Like all beautiful things, it came naturally!

In this enchanted environment, bees are pampered, never disturbed, and their delicate ecosystem is free from pollution and noise.

After all this pampering, hard work and time spent, the bees reciprocate with an incredible product, exceptional honey. They live in this incredible world in the most positive way possible, and we see the result when Giacomo offers us a tasting of their incredible honey.

Why did we choose the honeys from Borgo Il Mezzanino Farm?

These are “ethical honeys”. The production strictly respects the rhythms of nature, since the well-being of the bees is essential to obtain a tasty and excellent product.
We truly invite you to visit Borgo Il Mezzanino, as we did, and discover the wonderful world of bees. Giacomo will guide you for a couple of hours on a tour and a tasting of this delicious ethical honey, and you will receive a certificate of participation.
