Sangiovese “Sabbioso” PGI Benaco Bresciano: territory, taste and pairings
What is Sangiovese “Sabbioso” PGI Benaco Bresciano?
This is a pure Sangiovese produced by Azienda Agricola La Guarda in Valtènesi (Lake Garda), from historic vineyards planted in 1968 in Castrezzone (Muscoline). It ferments for about 18 days and ages 18-20 months in 5 hl Slavonian oak barrels.
Alcohol content: 13.5% vol.
Color: ruby with garnet reflections
Aromas: plum, morello cherry, slight violet, sweet wood spice
A red wine with character that interprets the Benaco Bresciano PGI territory with elegance and structure, perfect for those looking for “the flavors of yesteryear” crafted with artisan care.
How much can it age and how best to store it?
Sabbioso PGI can evolve in the bottle for 8-10 years, developing more aromatic complexity. Storage:
bottles lying down, in the dark
cool and stable environment (12-18°C), humidity 65-75%
avoid vibrations and temperature changes
After opening, reseal with cork/stopper and keep in the fridge: it stays pleasant for 2-3 days; before serving, bring it back to 16-18°C. These good practices help preserve the ripe fruit profile, soft tannins and balance typical of Valtènesi Sangiovese.
What to pair it with and at what temperature to serve it?
Serve it at 18°C in a wide goblet. Ideal pairings enhance its tannic texture and lacustrine freshness:
grilled meats, fiorentina steaks, braised and roasted meats.
Typical dishes such as spiedo alla bresciana and aged alpine cheeses (Bagòss, Silter)
For a more harmonious sip, oxygenate the bottle 30-60 minutes before serving. Wood spice and plum/marasca notes also make it versatile with pasta with meat sauce and light game. Useful keywords: “Sangiovese pairings,” “red wine serving temperature.”
What does “PGI Benaco Bresciano” mean and what does it say about the wine?
PGI is “Indicazione Geografica Tipica”: for Benaco Bresciano it indicates wines produced on the moraine hills southwest of Lake Garda (Valtènesi). Here the breezy climate and pebble-rich soil favor savory, long-lived reds. The PGI offers stylistic freedom to the producer while maintaining the link to the terroir: the Sangiovese Sabbioso was thus born, combining tradition (1968 vineyards) and modern artisanal interpretation (aging in Slavonian oak) for a Mediterranean, fresh and spicy profile, different from a Chianti but recognizable in the typical cherry of the variety.
