Organic Lugana DOC to the bell chimes of unusual scents

The bbuono team traveled to Lake Garda, more specifically to the production lands of the famous Lugana wine, to the municipalities that most represent Trebbiano di Lugana, or the better known and older native name of Turbiana, between Peschiera, Pozzolengo and Sirmione.

We visited the Marangona winery, an obligatory stop on the journey to the knowledge of Lugana wine.
Marangona is located in the heart of Lugana, and the winery named after it is a 17th-century courtyard. The name “Marangona” originated from one of the bells of the Torre dei Lamberti in Verona and derives from “marangon,” (which in Veronese dialect means carpenter/woodworker), this signaled the beginning and end of work activities.

We met its owner Alessandro, a graduate of Enology and Viticulture.

This young man has been taking over the winery since 2007, imprinting his own idea of estate wine, maintaining a production with an artisanal approach and imposing low environmental impact, both in the cellar and in the vineyard.
Converts the vineyard to organic management, manages to give the minerality (characteristic of these clay soils) the sapidity and freshness, to his wines.

There is no chemical agent in his productions, he uses recycled material and lightened bottles, the grapes undergo little intervention and a lot of naturalness. Alessandro is a beautiful person and his wines are as well, he produces one of the most interesting Lugana in the current panorama. All of his production is noteworthy, especially on the winery’s first wine that consistently bears the same name, Marangona, and on Tre Campane, a reserve that the winery calls “Our vision of Lugana.”

A wine rooted in the land

Lugana Marangona DOC Organic is obtained solely from the fermentation of Autoctona Turbiana grapes.

The grapes are derived from the estate vineyards. Harvesting is by hand in boxes, and the grapes are processed whole to preserve aromas and typicity as much as possible. Fermentation is in steel at a low temperature, and aging is carried out on the fine lees for a period of 3 to 4 months following the harvest.
The wine is fresh, characteristic aromas of white flowers and white-fleshed fruit, with an unobtrusive structure and distinct drinkability.

The Lugana Tre Campane DOC Organic is produced solely from Autoctona Turbiana grapes and is the union of a part of the wine derived from early (mid-September) harvested grapes with a larger part produced from fully ripe grapes.

Fermentation is in stainless steel, at a low temperature, with aging on the lees lasting until spring.

This Lugana best expresses the wine’s freshness, complexity and body. Its aromas are very fine and complex, flowers and white-fleshed fruits are joined by hints of citrus.

The structure is fragrant and vertical, the taste is persistent with a slight bitter almond finish, and it is a wine that excites with its balance and elegance.

Why did we choose the organic farm Marangona

We were drawn to this farm that Alessandro Cutolo, together with two fellow students, decided to manage in 2007, imprinting it with his own vision. By firmly maintaining its artisanal approach, he led the winery to produce Lugana wine under organic farming practices and with low environmental impact, using vines up to 35 years old. Producing this wine involves many challenges, but Alessandro has overcome them and offers a product that best represents Lugana. We thank Alessandro for agreeing to collaborate with bbuono.
